Agrius convolvuli macro photography

Agrius convolvuli macro

This larva of Agrius convovuli has been photographed in the countryside near Pisa in Tuscany. This specie is common in Europe and Africa and its characteristic is to have a small horn at the endo of the body containing the last part of the abdomen of the worm.

The caterpillars are very huge reaching from 10 to 6cm of length and up to 1.5cm of diameter. The name derive from the habit of the larva to eat the leaves of the Bindweed (Convolvulus) flower, therefore its Latin name “convolvuli”.

At the end of its life-cycle this larva will became a large hawk moth (lediptera) “Convolvulus Hawk-moth”.
