Bergen-Belsen concentration camp

The Bergen-Belsen concentration camp is located in the lower Saxony near the town of Bergen. It is about halfway between the cities of Hamburg and Hanover and can be reached with a quick detour from the highway E45, usually used as way back from travels in northern Europe. Today the camp area is open to the public and it is a stimulus to thoughts and reflections thanks to its memoir titled “House of Silence”, to its open spaces, memorials and a walking path through trees and vegetation.

The camp has had many uses throughout its history. Originally opened in 1940 as a prison campo for Soviet prisoners with the name of Stalag XI-C. Without big buildings the prisoners were forced to take refuge in holes in the ground or makeshift shelters and in most cases destined to die. Two years later, the camp became a concentration camp under the direct supervision of the SS.

Although the camp has not been equipped with gas chambers the impressive number of the victims is estimated in total of about 50,000 people because of diseases, malnutrition, poor sanitation and epidemics of typhus. Among others civilians in the camp have been imprisoned and died Anne Frank and her sister Margot.
